Welcome to COPE

This is Giles County, Virginia

Citizens Organized to Protect the Environment (COPE) is a grassroots organization founded in Giles County, Virginia in 1991 as a direct response to American Electric Power's (AEP) proposed 765kv Wyoming, WV to Cloverdale, VA electrical transmission line. COPE's aggressive and relentless resistance ultimately led to AEP withdrawing its proposed corridor through Giles County.

Since then COPE has been involved in other environmental issues ranging from illegal dumping of PCBs to litter control. As an organization COPE

  • has a broad based approach to environmental quality and endorses a developmental strategy that benefits all citizens by enhancing our tax base. We recognize that keeping future development within the existing infrastructure of roads, sewer and water will strengthen the tax base,
  • encourages development geared toward renewable entry level housing for our blue-collar citizens, thus laying a strong foundation for a vibrant upward bound community;
  • is actively seeking business and industry  to fill our industrial parks and business incubators;
  • is actively seeking alternative agriculture for our producers to help keep Giles county's  agricultural base strong and responsive to trends that will contribute to long range growth and profit;
  • encourages all citizens to realize that the future of our young people is within our county and urges all citizens to attend Board of Supervisors meetings to stay informed of decisions that will influence where we are going as a county;
  • firmly believes in the concept "Citizens first, one county-one people". The future of Giles county is in the hands of it's citizens and the decisions we make today will influence our children's tomorrow.

We are COPE, come and join us.

In the recent past, neighboring Montgomery County was a place of beautiful farmland and affordable housing, much like Giles County is now. Rampant growth in Montgomery County has resulted in over priced real-estate and sky high taxes.
